Ice cube trays – relic or new and useful again?

Really – does anyone still have/use ice-cube trays nowadays?ice

Many folks have refrigerators with built-in ice making capabilities whether it’s through the door or in the freezer compartment. But hold on to those ice-cube trays. Here’s why:

  1. Use them to pour that last little bit of juice (OJ, apple, V8, etc) into the trays and freeze. They add a nice slushy consistency to your smoothies.
  2. Pour vegetable stock in and use later to add to soups and stews.
  3. Lots of basil or other herbs leftover? chop, put in trays with water and freeze. Wa-lah! great to add to soups, stews and smoothies later on.
  4. Leftover cranberry relish (see an earlier post for a recipe that will have you eating it by the spoonful) – never fear! Spoon into trays and freeze to use later in smoothies (there’s a yummy cranberry smoothie recipe in an earlier post as well). Frozen gives it more of a milkshake texture

Do you still use ice-cube trays? What are your favorite uses?

P.S. They come in all kinds of fun shapes! ice2

Cheers!
